What exactly is coffee chaff?

But what exactly is it? It’s the unsung hero of our much loved cup of coffee. Coffee chaff is the thin flakey layer around coffee beans that’s shed during the roasting process. It’s a natural byproduct which is usually discarded, but it’s surprisingly rich in nutrients and makes for a valuable supplement for your garden!

The green thumbs among us will know about coffee fertiliser, and you’ve probably heard all the rave about coffee grounds… But coffee chaff is even better! It’s more eco-friendly because it breaks down a lot faster, plus its light, fluffy texture adds organic bulk and aeration to the soil. This helps retain moisture while allowing oxygen to reach plant roots.

How to use coffee chaff in your garden

Like any natural fertiliser, use sparingly with your plants and remember that a little goes a long way. You can create a nutritious mulch, soil conditioner, compost activator and much more. Here’s a few suggestions on how you can use it:

• Mix into potting soil when repotting to give an immediate nitrogen boost.
• Sprinkle onto flower beds before mulching to enrich the soil and fill gaps.
• Add to your garden composter to speed up decomposition and produce a richer compost.
• Scatter around your fruits and vegetables to fend off garden pests and feed plants with each watering.
